Why I Wake Early

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and crotchety–

best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light–
good morning, good morning, good morning.

Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.

It’s hot! This juice is simple, frothy, lightly sweet and refreshing.

Buy a seedless watermelon if you want to, but you can eat watermelon seeds. If the seeds are small, or you have a high powered blender, feel free to leave them. (If the seeds are large and you don’t feel like picking them out, blend as is, and then run the juice through a sieve before serving.)

If you have spicy honey on hand, use that; if not, use a light honey. I employ hot honey quite often (see here, here, and here), both the brand pictured, and Mike’s. This isn’t a sponsored post.

This recipe was created by my awesome brother-in-law, who was kind enough to let me shoot it when I was in France, and to share it with you now. Thanks, Louis! Serves a crowd.

  • ingredients:
  • 1 5-pound (2 1/4 kilo) watermelon
  • 1 4-pound (1.8 kilo) cantaloupe
  • 1/4 packed cup fresh mint
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons (hot) honey

  • procedure:
  •      Cut away the rind from the watermelon; chop the fruit and move to the bowl of a blender. Cut the cantaloupe in half; spoon out and discard the seeds, then scoop the cantaloupe into the blender. Add the mint and honey. Blend on high speed for 2 minutes. Run the juice through a sieve, or not, depending on your texture preference. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to several hours, to chill.
